Ladakh is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the world. For everyone who harbors a passion for travel, Ladakh is a dream destination. If you are among the many who hope to experience the pristine waters and crystal clear skies, and play in the snow, then read on to find out about the Ladakh weather and also the best time to visit Ladakh for snowfall and unforgettable memories.
Ladakh Location
Ladakh means the ‘Land of High Passes’. It is a barren yet beautiful region located in the Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir, situated in the northern part of India. Ladakh lies between the Kunlun Mountains in the north and the Himalayas in the south. Specifically, the hill range to the South is called the Ladakh Range. It is a region where pristine rivers of Indus (yes the primordial Indus Valley civilization) and Zanskar flow and their confluence is one of the most ethereal sights to behold and is one of the best tourist places in Ladakh.
Leh Altitude and Ladakh Height
The entire region of Ladakh lies at an altitude of 2500 to 4500 meters above sea level. It is the “Land of High Passes” remember? So yes, there are peaks with altitudes of over 6000 m from sea level. The altitude of Leh city itself is over 3500m. Such high altitudes have 2 primary effects on Ladakh weather which I will explain below.
Ladakh Weather
Firstly, at such high altitudes, oxygen is rarefied. In simple terms, due to the height of Ladakh, fewer molecules of oxygen are available for breathing, per breath. This is why experts suggest carrying oxygen cylinders. Also, it is mandatory that anyone visiting Ladakh spare one day for climate acclimatization.
Secondly, due to a combination of Ladakh’s altitude and latitude, Ladakh weather is extremely cold all across the year. Summer months in Ladakh are from April to July when temperatures range from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. The winter season in Ladakh starts from October to February, characterized by subzero temperatures and heavy snowfall. Ladakh temperature falls to -40 degrees Celsius in winter. Ladakh is home to a cold desert called Nubra Valley, where temperatures are even lower. In winter months, the heavy snowfall causes the entire landscape to be covered in a thick blanket of snow, adding to the surreal beauty of this paradise.
Also, due to the altitude, the weather in Ladakh remains dry throughout the year which means there is hardly any moisture in the air. Rains are sparse and mainly occur from July to September. A few years back there had been a situation of flooding caused by cloud bursts and subsequent flash floods but these are anomalies. Typical Ladakh weather is characterized by dry and cold surroundings.
Light snowfall starts in October ends when the entire region is covered in a white blanket. Snowfall becomes heavier in November to January when the region is covered in several meters of snow.

Roads in Ladakh are maintained by BRO – Border Roads Organization. However, facing the brunt of a harsh winter combined with hard snow makes the roads slippery and dangerous to travel. This when added with peak tourist season also means travel times are longer.
August to mid-September
These are the monsoon months. Though rainfall is sparse, this time carries with it a possibility of landslides and flash floods. However, this does not deter tourists and peak season continues till mid-September
Late September to the end of October
This is off-season in Ladakh. Most roadside shops and restaurants close down during this time. However, owing to no snowfall the roads in this season are in better condition. Travel times are shorter due to fewer tourists. If you are lucky, you may experience light snowfall in the upper regions of Ladakh during this time.
