The Geological Marvel
Lonar Lake is one of only four known hyper-velocity impact craters in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth, making it a geological marvel. The lake, roughly circular with a diameter of about 1.2 kilometers and a depth of around 150 meters, was created when a high-velocity meteorite struck the Deccan Plateau. This impact resulted in a unique saline water body with both alkaline and freshwater ecosystems.
The basaltic rock surrounding the lake, formed from volcanic activity, adds another layer of geological significance. Researchers and geologists from around the world visit Lonar to study its unique composition, contributing to our understanding of planetary impacts and basaltic formations.
Ecological Richness
The ecological diversity of Lonar Lake is equally fascinating. The lake’s ecosystem supports various species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. Algal blooms, which can turn the water into shades of pink and green, indicate the presence of unique microorganisms that thrive in the lake’s saline and alkaline conditions.
Bird watchers find Lonar Lake a paradise, with numerous migratory and resident bird species flocking to its shores. Species such as flamingos, herons, and ducks can be spotted, making it a significant site for avian biodiversity. The surrounding forest area also supports wildlife, including peafowl, deer, and various reptiles.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Lonar Lake is steeped in mythological and historical lore. According to local legend, the lake is associated with the demon Lonasura, who was defeated by Lord Vishnu in his avatar as Daityasudan. This story is enshrined in the ancient Daityasudan Temple near the lake, a fine example of Hemadpanti architecture. The temple’s intricate carvings and historical significance attract both devotees and history enthusiasts.
The region around Lonar Lake also features several ancient temples and ruins, such as the Gomukh Temple, which channels fresh water into the lake, and the Kamalja Devi Temple. These structures offer a glimpse into the region’s rich historical and cultural past, blending spirituality with natural beauty.
The Journey and Experience of Visiting Lonar Lake
There are two routes to reach Lonar Lake, one can go to MTDC by road or the other way to Gomukh Temple. I went through the path of Gomukh temple, but the good thing about this path is that you will find many temples on it.
You have to do 30 minutes jungle trek here which is quite easy. The special thing is that peacock sounds will be heard in this forest. If you come here during the rainy season, you may find it difficult due to the mud in the lake’s premises. In the year 2015, an area of 3.80 km has been declared as Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary by the government.
