Sonmarg is a beautiful valley nestled in the heart of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a picturesque land that epitomizes natural beauty. Sonmarg means “Meadow of Gold” a name given to this beautiful land because the snow-covered landscape gleams like gold when the sun’s rays fall on it. Historically, Sonmarg was the gateway to the ancient Silk Road along with Gilgit. It connected Tibet with Kashmir. Sonmarg Weather in Different Seasons
The beauty of Sonmarg (and ofcourse Kashmir) lies in the fact that every season enshrouds the landscape in a different hue and fervor.
Summer – During the summer months, Sonmarg transforms into a vibrant paradise adorned with a kaleidoscope of wildflowers, including buttercups, daisies, and forget-me-nots, painting the meadows in vibrant hues. The Sindh River meanders through the valley, adding to the enchanting ambiance with its crystal-clear waters. Visitors can indulge in trout fishing or simply relax by the riverside, soaking in the serenity of the surroundings.
In summer, you can hire ponies from the entry point to the Thajiwas Glacier, which is one of the best things to see in Kashmir. The ride to the glacier takes over an hour, the route being a mix of winding pathways and steep hillocks skillfully navigated by the ponies and their masters.
Once you reach the glacier, you can enjoy sledding or ice scooters, you can enjoy Maggi made by the locals here by thawing the ice from the glacier or you could simply try hiking up on your own.
Winter – Winter in Sonmarg starts in late November and lasts until early March. During this time, temperatures can drop significantly, with daytime highs ranging from freezing to slightly above freezing, while nighttime lows can plummet well below freezing, often reaching sub-zero temperatures. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to hover around -10 to -15 degrees Celsius (14 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit) during the coldest periods of winter.
Snowfall is a prominent feature of winter weather, with heavy snowfall occurring frequently, especially from December to February. The region receives substantial snow accumulation, creating thick blankets of snow that cover the entire landscape, including roads, trees, and rooftops. The weight of snow on the glacier causes avalanches in Sonmarg, like the ones we can see in the news now.
In peak winter, the road between Srinagar and Sonamarg remains closed. In the months from December to March, the road is only open till Gagangir. The stretch between Gagangir to Sonamarg remains completely snowed out. Hence, if you are traveling in winter, you do not get to visit Sonmarg and the Thajiwas Glacier.
Things to do in Sonmarg
