Murud Janjira is a popular tourist destination in the coastal town of Murud in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. Located about 150 km from Mumbai city, this quaint village is known for its picturesque surroundings, a brown sandy shoreline aka the Murud Beach, and clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea. How to Reach Murud Janjira

Murud Janjira can be accessed by car alone. Recently a port has been built but no cruises or jetties take you directly to the beautiful Murud Beach. So here are the routes you can take and the cost involved.

  • From Mumbai by Car – You can reach this beautiful Murud Beach by car. Option 1, you drive down from Mumbai and take the Panvel to Pen to Alibag to Murud Route. Option 2, you drive down from Mumbai to Panvel and take the expressway, then you take the Khalapur exit to Kalamboli and reach Murud via Roha.
  • From Mumbai by Ferry – You can take the ferry from Bhau Cha Dhakka and get off at Mandwa Jetty and then you take a car/cab to drive down to Murud Janjira.
  • From Pune by Car – Drive down from Pune by taking the route via Mulshi, Indapur and finally reach Murud. This is about 160 km long and will take over 4 hours to reach.

The highlight of Murud Janjira is its beach. Murud Beach as it is popularly called, is a long stretch of shoreline, which is a mix of rocky and brown sand structures. Despite a long shoreline, only a patch of the beach is accessible to tourists on account of the excessive rocky patches that dot the shoreline. There are boats that you can take to visit the next important tourist place, the Murud Fort.

Murud Janjira Fort

The Murud Janjira Fort is the reason the place is called Murud Janjira. It is popular owing to its historical significance. This was one of the forts built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and is known for being impenetrable. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea, this fort is situated on a rock that doubles up as an island.

There is a boat ride that you can take from Murud Beach, which will cost about Rs. 50 per person. The ride will offer breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and the Janjira Fort. The Murud Fort is open from 7 am to 6 pm. Timings may vary based on season.
