The Biraja Temple Jajpur is well-connected to various modes of transportation, so getting there isn’t difficult at all. I drove down from Cuttack but you can choose the options below.

By Road:

The easiest way to reach Jajpur is by road from Cuttack. Jajpur is connected by a network of well-maintained roads from major cities like Bhubaneswar (about 120 kilometers away), Cuttack (about 50 kilometers), and even from places like Puri and Kolkata. The roads are good with some small rough patches in between but it will be a comfortable ride for people of all age groups.

3. Best Time to Visit for Fewer Crowds

If you prefer a more peaceful and less crowded experience, the best time to visit Biraja Temple Jajpur is during the off-peak season. While the temple is a popular pilgrimage site, it doesn’t attract as many visitors during the summer months, which are particularly hot in Odisha. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to visit:

  • Off-Peak Season (Summer and Monsoon): From May to September, the weather in Odisha can get quite humid and rainy. While this is considered the off-season, it’s also the time when you’ll find fewer crowds. The temple will be quieter, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful experience while offering you the chance to reflect and pray in solitude.
  • Festivals and Special Occasions (Peak Season): The best time to visit if you want to experience the grandeur of the temple and participate in vibrant festivities is during Durga Puja (September or October) and Maha Shivaratri (February or March). These festivals attract thousands of devotees, and the temple is adorned with decorations and special rituals. However, expect larger crowds and higher wait times during these times.
  • Winter (November to February): The winter months are ideal for visiting Biraja Temple Jajpur, as the weather is cool and pleasant. There are fewer tourists compared to the peak festival season, making it a great time for a peaceful visit. However in December Christmas vacations, the temple can get crowded, just like any other place.

In terms of days, the weekends are usually crowded with a lot of local people visiting the temple for Ma Biraja’s blessings. So if you want a peaceful visit, ensure you visit during the weekday.

The Biraja Temple Jajpur is one of the finest examples of Kalinga architecture. Its structure is adorned with intricate carvings, and its inner grand sanctum is a sight to behold. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Biraja, who is depicted in a form of Goddess Durga. It is believed that the Navel of Goddess Sati fell here.

If you’re keen on participating in the local rituals, you can join in the daily aartis or offer prayers. Devotees often offer flowers, fruits, and other items as part of their devotion to the goddess. You also have options of making special offering to the Goddess. The temple committee has a counter from where you can get the necessary details of the rituals.

You can treat yourself to the sumptuous Mahaprasad (sacred food) offered here, which is a unique experience itself, and partaking in it is believed to purify the mind and body.

3. Take a Walk Around the Temple Complex:

The temple complex is sprawling and peaceful, making it ideal for a calm walk. As you stroll around, you’ll see locals going about their daily offerings and rituals. You can sit for a while in the quiet corners of the temple and meditate or simply soak in the peaceful vibes.

As is a penchant in Odisha, you will find a pyre of fire and several candles burning there. You can buy candles from the nearby shops/counters and offer to the Goddess here. It is believed that if you make a wish & light a candle here, your wishes get fulfilled through Ma Biraja’s blessings.

Jajpur is home to several other ancient temples and historical landmarks. While visiting the Biraja Temple Jajpur, you can also explore nearby places like the Ratnagiri Buddhist Monastery, Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, and Bhairabi Temple. These spots will give you a more holistic view of the historical and spiritual significance of the region. Of course not all of these are in Jajpur. Also, Cuttack happens to be the birth place of India’s most loved freedom fighter, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. There is a memorial in Cuttack in his name, near the banks of Mahanadi river which makes for a perfect visit if you are a history lover.
