Gulmarg Weather and Gulmarg Temperature in Chillai Kalan

Weather in Gulmarg during Chillai Kalan is characterized by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. Skies remain overcast with clouds, and you will definitely not see the sun for several days at an end.

  • Gulmarg Temperature: The temperature during winter in Gulmarg itself can be quite chilly. Daytime temperatures often hover around freezing, providing crisp, refreshing air for those exploring the winter landscape. However, as the sun sets, the mercury drops significantly, dropping the night temperatures below freezing. Travelers venturing out into the snow-laden streets are greeted by the crunch of snow beneath their boots and the refreshing bite of the cold mountain air. During Chillai Kalan, even daytime temperatures drop below zero, and nights are not only cold but windy as well.
  • Snowfall: Gulmarg is known for its heavy snowfall, and winter brings a blanket of snow to the region. During the Chillai Kalan period, heavy snowfall occurs daily. The snow-covered landscapes create a picturesque setting, attracting skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

Gulmarg Weather in Winter – Travel Considerations

The extremely heavy snowfall in winter causes overcast skies and low visibility. The Srinagar airport shuts down due to the accumulation of several meters of snow on the runway. So if you are planning a visit during Chillai Kalan, ensure that you keep a few extra days and extra money, as it is very normal for flights to be canceled for several days at an end.

In fact, during this period, all the routes that lead to Kashmir like the Manali Srinagar road also shut down due to heavy snowfall. This causes a shortfall of even basic supplies in the valley.

But if you do find yourself in a position where you get stuck in Kashmir, worry not. Kashmiris are the warmest and most tourist loving people on this planet. I had been stuck in the valley for over a week due to heavy snowfall canceling all flights. But I met Kashmiris who would gladly accommodate you in their homes and starve so that there is enough food for you. Such is the warmth of lovely Kashmiris.

Winter Sports in Gulmarg

The defining characteristic of Gulmarg’s winter is undoubtedly its heavy snowfall. As temperatures drop, the region is blanketed in pristine, glistening snow, creating a postcard-worthy scene that attracts travelers and winter sports enthusiasts alike. The charm of Gulmarg lies not just in its natural beauty but also in the myriad winter activities it offers.

Ski Resort– One of the key attractions during the winter months is the Gulmarg Ski Resort. With its snow-covered slopes and well-maintained ski trails, the resort becomes a haven for skiers and snowboarders seeking an adrenaline-filled adventure. The powdery snow and well-groomed runs make Gulmarg a sought-after destination for winter sports enthusiasts from around the globe.

Skiing with locals – If you do not want to spend on the Ski resort, you can also try it from the locals, who charge Rs.1000 for Skiing with gear and trainer, for as long as you want. Unlike the resort, the locals just convert one of the myriad slopes covered with snow for skiing. So though this will not be a professional experience, it will allow you to experience skiing without spending a lot.

Gondola ride – Gulmarg is famous for its Gondola rides which are built in 2 tiers. Usually, in seasons other than winter, tourists take the ride to see snow. In winter, you do not need to take a Gondola to see snow as the entire valley is covered in a thick blanket of snow. But taking the Gondola in this season will give you lovely panoramic views of the snow-covered landscape.

Sled rides– Locals also provide sled rides. Here you need to ride a sled with one of the trainers. The trainer sits in front and maneuvers the sled, and you get to enjoy the rear
